Taliban violence against women in Afghanistan has never gone away. Disturbing stories of suppression and brutality show a society hanging in the balance. It’s over a decade since the US invasion of Afghanistan, but Taliban authority appears to be rising once more. As violence against women escalates in the country, how much has actually changed in Afghanistan? When a young woman was mercilessly killed in front of a braying audience last year it sent shock-waves around the world. “It was tyrannical and barbaric. It’s impossible the law would allow what they did”, says witness Mullah Badam. But some are fighting back. MP Fawzia Koofi argues that for her male opposition, “women’s rights are a matter of sacrifice”. This disturbing report shows Afghan society hanging in the balance.
